The New Culture of Sex on Campus. Thanks to everything from pop culture to college propaganda , when students arrive on campuses today they expect—with varying levels of inclination and trepidation—to have a really good time. How did college become fun? To really understand, we have to go back, back three hundred years at least, to when college was not fun at all. There were substantial penalties for deviance and they came swiftly. At the time, most students were relatively humble middle-class men studying to be ministers like their professors.

Email Strong confident woman. Many titans of the tech world — entrepreneurs, executives, investors, founders of companies — regularly host drug-fueled, sex-laced parties. For real reform, we have to dig deeper. A hedonistic ethic pervades all our public institutions. Universities hold sex weeks where porn stars are speakers and sex toy companies display their wares.

Troy Francis September 3, Travel; Comments. n culture may be in flames around us, but we might as well enjoy the party.” I don’t want Western culture to embody excess & immorality. But you’re right, it is happening. I don’t want to hang it all up and enjoy the decline.
While teaching a dating and spirituality class, she became intrigued with the hookup culture on college campuses. Her students often talked about how great hooking up was and that everybody was doing it. Following spring break, students discussed what happened over the break. Not sure why I do it. This sent Freitas on a quest to discover if her students were different from students on other college campuses. For nine years, Freitas has traveled to college campuses to talk with students about sex and hooking up.
Freitas interviewed students at private secular, public and Catholic colleges and universities. Her findings shed light on what drives the hookup culture. Forty-five percent of student interviewees said young adults believe they are expected to be casual about sex in college. Thirty-six percent thought their peers were too casual about sex. When asked about the definition of a hookup, students preferred a very broad definition because of the pressure to hook up.
They defined it as anything from kissing to sex. Freitas also discovered an official social contract surrounding hooking up. Hookups must be brief, which could mean five minutes in the corner kissing or a quickie in the restroom.

Fifty percent of her students were virgins when they got to college, she said. And 25 percent still were when they left. Almost all yearned to feel safe and cared for. Wade, 42, was teaching classes about human sexuality and noticed that their class discussions were very different from the research she had studied.
The hookup may be a drunken “make out” on the dance floor at a party or it might involve sleeping over and taking the so-called “walk of shame” in the morning. 3. Comments It’s freshman year. I make out the words “everclear” and “blackout drunk” over the din of awful house music blasting from the expensive-looking speakers in some fraternity house. I have no idea what’s going on, and neither do many of my fellow classmates, which doesn’t stop them from passing out drunk. I stayed for an hour or so — enough time to get asked, in the tradition of great cliches, if I were a lesbian, a prude, or a slut. Enough time to see multiple strangers pair off in dark corners, trying and failing to stand up straight.
Swap out vodka for beer, or cheap nameless grain liquor, fraternity houses for bars or clubs, and this scene was replicated over and over for four years. For an elite few at Penn, that night was fairly typical, including the confusion felt.

Visit his website at Troy Francis. I recently spent a week in Las Vegas. As a Brit abroad it was an interesting experience for many reasons, a few of which that pertain to hookup culture I discuss here. Of course, Las Vegas or the strip, anyway exists only as a site of hedonism, and as such is distinct from other US cities.
I know from personal experience that pickup in New York, for example, is a very different proposition. Nevertheless, since Vegas is a place of extremes—-extreme decadence, extreme sexual licentiousness, extreme lavishness, extreme wealth—and it is a kind of mecca for dissolute party-goers, it extrapolates some of the worst or best, depending on your view aspects of Western culture and gives them a setting where they can flourish on a grand scale.
This is a town where the hugest suites with panoramic views and gold baths are available only to those who have hustled hard. Unsurprisingly, something in the air brings out the hustling instinct in the women too. Standing by the bar at the Encore Beach Club observing nubile, bikini-clad bodies dancing to Will. He opened well and his target, the most attractive of the girls, responded well and appeared interested.
After several minutes of conversation which included light touching, laughter and some push-pull banter, the man led the girls to the bar where he bought shots for all of them. It was only a matter of time now.
Students May Not Be Hooked on Hookup Culture
Most of these don’t end well. Mar 2, Getty Images Hooking up with your coworker can end one of two ways: Don’t be that second person. We always flirted and there was serious sexual tension. One summer, I went over to his house, and we swam in his pond, and next thing I know, we were naked having hot sex. Afterward, we both agreed to keep it a secret.
The hookup culture in college is a huge thing, especially at a huge school like Penn State. The huge hookup culture I believe goes along with the fact that this is a huge party school. The one thing about parties that bothers me is that a lot of the time they can turn into just a giant hookup party, which isn’t always the best thing.
Blogs Tue Mar 20, – 4: Besides the elegant interior, all I remember about that seminar was that the professor leading it suddenly told us what he had learned about student sexual activity on campus. Apparently, it was quite common, back in , for students at Boston College BC to obtain large kegs of beer and hold parties for first-year students that disintegrated into orgies. The reason why the lonely, homesick freshmen drank so much, someone had discovered, was because they felt so shy and inhibited, they would not have been able to fornicate with strangers without the help of alcohol.
They seemed to be under the impression that fornication was a social obligation. But later, in that very same room, I spoke to someone who had also heard the keg party story, and she actually did do something about it. A documentary about Cronin, her class and some of her students is being released across the USA. I was very excited to hear about The Dating Project. However, this is because the scoffers do not understand how difficult it is for young people to initiate a chaste courtship nowadays and how an old-fashioned date could be a step in the right direction.
I met Kerry Cronin in , the kindest, most welcoming, and most unselfconsciously caring person I would find at BC. Kerry, who teaches interdisciplinary courses, had already begun to speak with her students about relationships and to learn from them what campus relationships looked like. Young men find themselves as mystified as young women. The young woman offered to put on a show for him.
Fast forward to the next morning. Time to make that trek across campus and back to your dorm. If you want to make the walk of shame your daily exercise, head to a school with an even male to female ratio, widespread condom availability on campus and lax dorm regulations. Check out these top 10 colleges for hookups. The map has locations around campus where you can find safe sex supplies like male and female condoms, dental dams, lubricant and a safer sex brochure.
Hookup culture, then, isn’t what the majority of students want, it’s the privileging of the sexual lifestyle most strongly endorsed by those with the most power on campus, the same people we.

Herman for The New York Times Nationwide, nearly 3 in 10 seniors say they have never hooked up in college. Their relationship, she noted, is not about the meeting of two souls. Until recently, those who studied the rise of hookup culture had generally assumed that it was driven by men, and that women were reluctant participants, more interested in romance than in casual sexual encounters.
But there is an increasing realization that young women are propelling it, too. But others, like Susan Patton, the Princeton alumna and mother who in March wrote a letter to The Daily Princetonian urging female undergraduates not to squander the chance to hunt for a husband on campus, say that de-emphasizing relationships in college works against women.
Patton, who has two sons, one a Princeton graduate and the other a current student. In many places, Ms. As lengthy interviews over the school year with more than 60 women at Penn indicated, the discussion is playing out in the lives of a generation of women facing both broader opportunities and greater pressures than perhaps any before, both of which helped shape their views on sex and relationships in college.
Keenly attuned to what might give them a competitive edge, especially in a time of unsure job prospects and a shaky economy, many of them approach college as a race to acquire credentials: Their time out of class is filled with club meetings, sports practice and community-service projects.
